BSB Training Package Changes: Key Updates You Need to Know

The new BSB Training Package and its transition deadlines
In this article

The BSB Training Resources transition deadlines are EXTENDED! We know that transitioning can be challenging for RTOs. That’s why we’ve provided helpful information below so you can manage your time properly and handle the deadlines with ease.

BSB Training Package Version 7.0

The BSB training package version 7.0 was released in October 2020. Some qualifications were deleted, while others were merged. Of the 62 qualifications, only 37 are left, while 409 units remain from 559 units. Most importantly, several qualifications and units are non-equivalent.

We know this sounds like a massive project for your RTO, especially if you have a lot of BSB qualifications and units in your scope. The good news is that, instead of the usual 12-month transition period, there’s an extended BSB training package transition deadline. You will have time to manage the changes, review the training products, assess the impact these changes may bring to your organization, and amend your training and assessment strategies.

With the massive updates on the BSB training package, the training, assessment, and certification issuance for 559 superseded and deleted BSB R6.1 training products (View PDF List) were extended until 19 April 2022. You should already have the updated versions by now. Thirteen BSB qualifications were given transition extension up to 30 June 2022 and one qualification up to 1 December 2022.

You can use this table to keep track of the affected qualifications, their equivalency, and the transition deadlines coming up:

What challenges does transition give RTOs?

We know that transitioning is difficult for RTOs, especially for a huge project such as the BSB updates. Many RTOs offer these courses, and as of May 2022, there are already 3,306 RTOs who already have the new BSB training component in their scope and are approved to deliver the training package.

If you haven’t updated already, now is the time to do it because you might be among the last to do so. Being the last to transition means losing out on a lot of enrolments because students always prefer RTOs with the latest courses.

How sought-after are BSB courses?

The BSB training package is among the most popular in Australia. Records show that despite the pandemic, the number of enrollees in BSB programs for 2020 was not much affected.

The top five BSB programs with the greatest number of enrollees for 2019 and 2020 are BSB30115, BSB20115, BSB51918, BSB50215, and BSB30415, the superseded courses on the BSB training package update. According to the enrolment figures below, the enrolment rates weren’t affected as heavily by the pandemic as other courses during this time. This tells us there is still a considerable demand for these courses. With the pandemic restrictions slowly lifting, we can expect to see the number of students grow rapidly over the next few months.

As an RTO, you can use this opportunity to update to the latest courses and expand your scope. Below, you can see which courses have the most student demand and which courses have the specific pathways learners are looking for.

A lot of RTOs we’ve spoken to have already transitioned and are planning on expanding their scope to meet potential demand. When securing your resources for the BSB update, think further down the line. The best way to gain and retain students is with the right training pathways available at the onset.

A few reminders: What RTOs need to do before the transition period ends

  • During the given transition period, you are expected to:
  • Update your resources to the latest ones
  • Add the new training products to your scope
  • Transfer your ongoing students to the updated training product
  • Ensure that your students finish the course before the transition deadlines
  • Remain compliant

The affected qualifications will remain on your scope of registration until the end of the extended transition period unless you choose to withdraw them from your scope before the end of the period. Once the products are removed from the scope of registration, you should ensure that there are no further enrollees and issuance of qualifications and statements of attainment in the removed products.

The new BSB Training Package transition deadlines are just around the corner. You should act now and comply with the requirements to avoid any inconveniences. Don’t miss out!
